Protecting Our Institutions
Senator Pat Toomey (R-PA) and Congressman Ryan Costello (R-PA 6th) recently engaged in a dangerous attack on the judiciary by promoting the impeachment of the Justices that have tried to protect the rights of Pennsylvania voters.
The Pennsylvania Supreme Court recently found that Pennsylvania’s congressional map was drawn in a manner that violated core principles of electoral democracy. Now Mr. Toomey and Mr. Costello are seeking vengeance against the Pennsylvania Supreme Court for its legally sound decision to protect the integrity of elections in Pennsylvania.
Our government is based on the separation of powers between three equal branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judicial. Each branch serves as a check on the power of the others. Our representatives in Congress now seek to undermine that balance in order to protect themselves from being accountable to the voters in a fair election.
If legislators like the Senator and the Congressman will not stand up for our institutions, what will they stand up for? I say they should stand up for the most basic of democratic values, the sanctity of fair elections.
